IRobot recently released the vacuum bot, but its release was not matched with the unveiling of a a new floor-washing robot. Today, at CES 2014 the company took the wraps off just what we expected to see. That new bot comes in the form of the Scooba 450, a full-sized floor washing robot that replaces the.
The Scooba 390 is nearly two years old and is in need of a refresh. It’s a still a decent enough option, but given the progress iRobot has made over the past year or so, particularly with the fully redesigned Roomba 800 series, it’s clear the company was capable of some improvements.
The Scooba 450 isn’t hugely different than the 390, but it brings some nice changes and should do that much better at keeping your hardwood and tiles floors sparkling clean. The main difference with the new model is that its 3-cycle cleaning system was overhauled to be three times more better than before.
It still cycles water like last time, so the Scooba is always washing with clean water and sucking up and storing the dirty stuff, but now it cleans more effectively and uses its 750ml of on-board water more efficiently. Unlike the new 880, which did away with its brushes, the Scooba has kept them as they help scrub the floors and are more effective for a mopping action than they are for vacuuming. The Scooba 450 has two cleaning modes: a 20 minute short cycle and a 40 minute long cycle. The latter will use the entire tank and be able to clean up to 300 square feet, while the short cycle will be for smaller spaces (up to 150 square feet). The cycles are time-based, so they will run for the entire duration, rather than stopping when the bots sensors determine that the room is sufficiently clean, as a Roomba would. The Scooba 450 now has a handy Info button on the top, which will provide the user with some basic information, such as if the robot has enough power to clean a full cycle. The top also has a LED status bar, which will show the progress of the cleaning cycles (this is, how many minutes out of the 20 or 40 minute duration that are left).

As with previous Scooba models, the 450 will not dock itself and recharge and cannot operate on a schedule These functions were left out because human interaction is needed to fill the clean water tank and empty the dirty one, so scheduling would be of limited use. This time around though iRobot did make an stand where you can manually place the Scooba. This optional accessory costs $80 and will hold the robot upright so it dries properly and doesn’t take up too much space. It will charge the bot during the storage period.
In operation, the Scooba seems just as smart as ever and like it’s even more effective a cleaner than before. We only the 450 do a brief demo, but it pulled significant amounts of grime from an apparently clean floor and didn’t have any problems with larger debris, such as cereal. The Scooba has a clever wiggle motion that it uses while it moves through the room — this looks like the bot is scrubbing an area, but it’s actually using it’s on-board gyroscopes to confirm that it has traction on the wet floor and is moving along in the expected direction and speed.
