Lakeport The much anticipated opening night of “A Tuna Christmas,” sequel to 2007’s highly acclaimed “Greater Tuna” is just a week away. Actors Tim “Cheese” Barnes and Rod Rehe have been rehearsing their combined 22 roles since August, under the careful direction of Randy Hare. Despite the fact that all three men are busy business owners (Barnes owns Cheese’s Pizza in Lakeport, Rehe Gentle Touch Chiropractic in Lakeport, and Hare Signs of Randy Hare in Lower Lake), they have made time in their hectic schedules to prepare an outstanding performance of the adored comedy.
They’ve spent countless hours poring over the script, deciding exactly what voice, facial expressions, and posture each character they portray should have. “Every time they make a change in what they are doing, I have a hard time deciding which version of that character I like better,” said Hare. “The quality of the cast we have is exceptional. I’ve been able to let them take these parts and run with them. They really understand what these characters are all about.” Barnes and Rehe have some 30 years of combined acting experience, but this show proved to be a challenge even for seasoned performers.
Barnes explained: “The hardest part about this process has been creating these characters and playing off each other for so many months, and resisting the temptation to constantly one-up each other and make the other laugh.” Rehe agreed. “Performing seriously has been a challenge. I’ve been trying not to laugh at Barnes for three months,” he said. “We want the audience to laugh, but by the time this show opens we have to be past the point of cracking up at each other, and ourselves.” Both actors agree that this play is “exceptionally more intense” than any other show they’ve performed in. “Not intense in terms of the script being heavy or dramatic; it’s a comedy through and through.
By intense I mean the amount of focus and concentration it takes to refine eleven distinct characters, maintain that character for a short time and then switch to another, completely different one” Barnes said. Understandably, sometimes the actors get confused on which parts they are playing when, especially when they play multiple roles in a single scene, jetting off stage to switch costumes, and coming back on as someone else, often the opposite gender. “I need a big sign to look at as I’m walking on stage to remind me who I am at that moment so I can be sure I’m entering the scene as that character, with the right voice, walk, etc. And the right costume would be helpful, too,” added Rehe. Their director assured the actors that something like that will be in place back stage, and both actors breathed a sigh of relief. “Randy has done a lot to help us build these characters,” said Barnes. “He has been great to work with.” Rehe agreed, “It’s so nice to work with a director who has a clear vision for the show.

And it’s even nicer when that vision goes along with our quirky senses of humor.” Even though there are only two actors in this play, Hare stated, “this is as difficult as working with a cast of 22 people, except of course for scheduling rehearsals.
