I'll leave it to someone more educated in this stuff than me to explain the relationship between output impedance and headphone impedance, which can definitely affect the characteristics of the sound. There's also coloration-although most amps are really close to linear, some run a little darker or brighter; some amps can also give a smoother or harsher or warmer or more analytical tone to the headphones.

A better amplifier can also have cleaner signal processing for quieter operation, better detail retrieval, better dynamics, etc. I just replied to someone asking about the sound signature of the Crack, here's the relevant part of my response: First of all, I got the HD600 after the Crack was built, so I haven't spent a lot of time with them and the O2 (which we'll use as an equivalent to the Magni) but for the record I think the HD650 are significantly more responsive to the differences than the HD600. Going back and forth, it seems we're definitely in diminishing returns territory but for longer periods of listening I notice that the tonality of the O2 sounds more dry and compressed compared to the Crack's spacious and vibrant sound, despite O2 being subtly more resolving on the extreme ends of the frequency spectrum. The Crack still does dynamics and soundstage all notably better, and despite the high highs and low lows being a little softer I think they extend better.

The Crack gives the HD600 an overall more engaging and musical sound while still being very linear across the board. A very simplified and partial explanation: amps work best at low volumes. A cheap amp, like the one in your computer, strains to push high impedance headphones which causes distortion. The hd600 have a very high impedance peak 600 ohm, meaning a good amp is required to keep distortion low. Starting around the price of the hd600, 'upgrades' get pretty incremental. Spending more budget on an amp starts to makes sense. It's not like buying a tube amp for m50s.

Audio Asylum

Tube amps color sound favorably and do something something high current I don't know, I'm not a tube guy.
